SSI Enriched Air Nitrox Diving

The SSI Enriched Air Nitrox Specialty is one of the most popular scuba courses worldwide, and for good reason. Diving with Nitrox can extend your no-decompression limits, reduce surface intervals, and help you feel less tired after a full day of diving.

In this course you’ll learn how Nitrox works, how it affects your body, and how to safely plan and monitor Nitrox dives. You’ll practice analyzing cylinders, setting your dive computer, and staying within safe depth and exposure limits. We’ll also cover benefits, limitations, and common myths about Nitrox.

After training with Coral Sea Scuba, you’ll be ready to show proof of Nitrox certification at resorts and liveaboards around the world and start enjoying longer, safer dives.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I take the Enriched Air Nitrox Specialty?
Nitrox can extend your no-decompression limits and reduce your surface intervals, which means more time underwater and less time waiting on the surface. It’s especially useful for repetitive dives, photo and video diving, and liveaboard trips.

Do I need to be an experienced diver first?
You should be a certified Open Water Diver or equivalent. Many divers take Nitrox early in their training so they can take advantage of the benefits on future trips.

Will I do actual dives on Nitrox in this course?
The SSI Enriched Air Nitrox program can be completed as an academic-only course with optional training dives. Check with Coral Sea Scuba to see how our current schedule is set up and whether dives are included.

What skills and knowledge will I learn?
You’ll learn how to analyze Nitrox cylinders, set and verify your dive computer, plan Nitrox dives within safe depth and oxygen exposure limits, and follow proper labeling and documentation procedures.

Is Nitrox safer than air?
Nitrox can reduce nitrogen loading compared to air, which is one factor in decompression sickness risk. However, it introduces oxygen exposure limits that must be respected. This course teaches you how to manage both safely.

Will Nitrox help me go deeper?
No. In fact, Nitrox has a shallower maximum operating depth than air because of the higher oxygen content. The main benefit is more no-decompression time within recreational depths, not extra depth.

Does this specialty count toward advanced ratings?
Yes. The SSI Enriched Air Nitrox Specialty counts toward recognition levels such as Specialty Diver, Advanced Open Diver, and Master Diver.
