How long does the SSI Open Water Diver course take?

Most students complete their SSI Open Water Diver course in about two to three weekends. Your schedule at Coral Sea Scuba & Water Sports typically includes online academics, a confined water (pool) session, and four open water training dives.

Do I need any previous scuba experience?

No prior scuba experience is required. You just need to be comfortable in the water and have basic swimming skills. Our instructors will guide you step by step from your first breaths underwater to becoming a confident, certified diver.

What are the age and health requirements?

The minimum age for SSI Open Water Diver is usually 10–12 years old, depending on the program, with a parent or guardian’s consent for minors. All students complete a standard medical questionnaire; in some cases, a doctor’s approval may be required before training.

What equipment is included and what do I need to bring?

Coral Sea Scuba provides the major scuba gear for training, such as tanks, regulators, BCDs, and weights. You may be asked to bring or purchase personal items like a mask, snorkel, fins, and boots. We’ll review your specific gear needs when you enroll.

Where do the training dives take place?

Pool or confined water training is held locally in the Grants Pass area, and open water dives are completed at nearby lakes or ocean dive sites in Southern Oregon or Northern California, depending on conditions and class schedule.
