Wreck Diving – Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to be an experienced diver to take the Wreck Diving course?
You should be a certified Open Water Diver (or equivalent) and comfortable in the water before starting the SSI Wreck Diving Specialty. Recent dive experience is recommended so you can focus on learning wreck-specific skills.
Will we go inside the wrecks during this course?
This course focuses primarily on non-penetration wreck diving. You will learn how to safely approach, observe, and navigate around wrecks from the outside. Any limited swim-throughs are conducted conservatively and only when conditions, training level, and standards allow.
What equipment do I need for wreck diving?
In addition to your standard scuba setup, wreck diving often uses a primary dive light, a backup light, a cutting tool, a reel or spool, and a dive computer. Coral Sea Scuba & Water Sports can help you select or rent the appropriate gear for this course.
Is wreck diving dangerous?
Like all forms of diving, wreck diving has risks that must be managed with proper training, equipment, and planning. In this SSI specialty, you’ll learn how to recognize hazards such as entanglement, overhead environments, and silt, and how to avoid or minimize them to keep your dives safe and fun.
Will this course count toward other SSI certifications?
Yes. The SSI Wreck Diving Specialty can count toward your SSI Specialty Diver, Advanced Adventurer, and higher-level SSI recognition ratings. It is an excellent way to broaden your skills and expand your future diving opportunities.
